1 Samuel 10:1-16 “Anointing, Signs & Assurance”

When Samuel anointed Saul, he said, “…’Has not the LORD anointed you a ruler over His inheritance?’” (1b). God knew this word was difficult for Saul so He gave him three signs which occurred all in one day. The third sign was that God’s Spirit would come upon him powerfully and change him into another man. “It shall be when these signs come to you, do for yourself what the occasion requires, for God is with you.” (7) While the signs would boost Saul’s confidence in God’s word, the promise of His presence was central to His success as a ruler of God’s people. At this last sign Saul joined the prophets and began prophesying by the influence of the Holy Spirit. While many questioned saying, “…’Is Saul among the prophets?’” (12c). Those whose heart was touched by God supported him. The assurance Saul received should have alleviated all of Saul’s insecurities allowing him to serve in the assurance of God being with him.
