1 Samuel 11:1-13 “Division, Adversity & Unity”

In chapter 10 some rejected Saul as a newly appointed king. Then Nahash the Ammonite came against Jabesh-gilead attempting to make an outrageous agreement to totally demoralize them. “Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, he became very angry.” (6) Though he was anointed king, Saul continued working for his father. He took a yoke of oxen, cut them in pieces and sent them throughout Israel demanding they come together on behalf of Jabesh-gilead. A righteous anger rose in Him uniting Israel to rescue them from their oppressors. As a result of severe adversity, Israel was united under Saul and Samuel to successfully defeat their enemy. Some wanted to put to death those who previously mocked Saul’s appointment, but he said, “…’Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has accomplished deliverance in Israel.’” (13b). This humble response of Saul boosted Israel’s unity. We need Spirit filled people today to rise in righteous anger uniting us to work together against our oppressors!
