After Saul unified the people and successfully defended Jabesh-gilead, Samuel called the people to Gilgal to renew the kingdom. Gilgal is where they first crossed into the promise land and where they were circumcised in their flesh before conquering the land. In returning to Gilgal they are reminded that God’s presence was the key to victory and celebrated it with expressions of worship. Saul himself said, “…’today the LORD has accomplished deliverance in Israel.’” (13b). In this place, “…Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.” (15c). In worship we are reminded of the poverty of our flesh and the abundance of God’s power as the key to all forms of success. Failure to return to this truth not only jeopardizes our future, it robs us of joy! Any genuine renewal of God’s kingdom takes us back to the foundation of God’s presence and power!
