Hannah’s pain of not having children could not be alleviated even by the loving words of her husband. “Then Hannah rose after eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD.” (9) In the context of pain and corrupt leadership, she took her distress to God in prayer. Here she made a vow to the Lord that if He gave her a son, she would give him back to the Lord for his entire life. Because she prayed silently moving her lips, Eli thought she was drunk and rebuked her. Corrupt leaders misperceive the true condition of those they serve. However, rather than be offended, she confessed her distress, declared her integrity and Eli spoke healing words: “…’Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of Him.’” (17b). She then asked for Eli’s favor and returned to her family and then her sadness was replace by faith and hope. At times we can find no relief from our pain from even those who love us the most. So we rise in prayer and humility before God and man to be restored to hope! Faith can overcome great pain bringing us to much hope.
