“Now when the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the sons of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.” (7) Nothing stirs fear in our enemies like genuine repentance (turning to God/away from idols) and assembling for worship. Israel’s fear caused them to plead with Samuel to persist in crying out to God to save them from the Philistines. “Now Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, and the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel…” (10a) The LORD helped them by thundering against their enemies causing confusion. That day they began to regain lost territory and Samuel set up a memorial called Ebenezer saying, “…’Thus far the LORD has helped us.’” (12b). During the life of Samuel, the LORD was against the Philistines and increased peace with those who had suffered from their oppression. Samuel’s judging of Israel resulted in the repentance and justice essential to engage God’s help and favor. May God grant us the repentance leading to justice and, therefore, granting us His favor against our enemies!
