1 Samuel 9:21-27 “Private Words & Public Service”

Following Saul’s expression of insecurity, Samuel brings them to a worship service where he “…gave them a place at the head of those who were invited, who were about thirty men.” (22b). Also, Saul was given a preselected choice part of the sacrifice to consume saying, “…because it has been kept for you until the appointed time,…” (24c). We see God connecting Saul with Samuel as key to a successful reign over Israel. After returning to the city, Samuel spoke with Saul as a guest on the roof and woke him early in the morning to send him off on this new assignment. He told Saul to send his servant ahead so he could proclaim God’s word to him in private. While public encouragement is often given, before we can be effective public servants, we must hear God in the private realm. Specific instruction will follow to encourage and equip Saul to be an effective leader. When God’s word comes to us with supernatural confirmation, it helps us rise from insecurities to servants. Private words can equip us for public service.
