Ezra 7:1-10
When Ezra went to Jerusalem in the reign of Artaxerxes, he took others in this journey with him. What kind of man obtains such favor from the king and influence among God’s people? “…he was a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all he requested because the hand of the LORD his God was upon him.” (6) Ezra was a man who valued God’s Word reflected in copying Scripture for others to read. Not only this, but he was skilled in it. As a result, God’s hand was on him impacting political leaders, God’s people, and their spiritual leaders (7). God’s favor was with them in providing a safe and successful journey. Here we see both his practices and purposes. “For Ezra had firmly resolved to study the Law of the LORD and to practice it, and to teach His statues and ordinances in Israel.” (10) Ezra’s skill emerged from a determined persistence to study God’s word. His first purpose was to practice it himself, not to impress men, but to please God! Second, Ezra’s insights and example enabled him to teach God’s people. This is a resolution worth making! Let’s resolve to study God’s Word equipping us to both practice and teach God’s Word.
