Nehemiah 8:1-8
Rebuilding the walls was not sufficient for the safety of God’s people. “And all the people gathered as one person at the public square which was in front of the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses which the LORD had given [commanded] to Israel.” (1) Their exile to Babylon was due to their failure to adhere to God’s Word, so their future to be healthy, it was essential they return to God and His Word. We note this took place when “They gathered as one person…” or as they united for one purpose. Ezra brought God’s book to read to all “…the assembly of men, women, and all who could listen with understanding,…” (3b). The significance of ‘gathering’ is often overlooked when seeking spiritual health and safety [note Hebrews 10:19-25]. This was not to party, but to give undivided attention to what God’s Word! Ezra stood on a platform above the people to read from the book and “…all the people stood up.” (5d). Honor [of God’s Word] and humble worship preceded the reading of the book. After the priests gave explanation to it. There is no wall that can protect us from our enemies if we fail to align ourselves with God’s Word!
