Luke 20:41-47
After Jesus addressed questions designed to undermine His ministry, He asks a question to expose the
danger these religious leaders pose to all. “Then He said to them, ‘How is it that they say the Christ is
David’s son?’” (41) By referring to a Psalm where David calls the Messiah Lord, He then asks,
“Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?” (44). Jesus reveals they were looking
merely at the human side of the Messiah, but David spoke from a spiritual dimension which they
ignored. They were not loyal to the whole counsel of God’s word, but clung to verses favoring their
positions. Jesus warns the people of their motives as leaders revealing self interest and lack of genuine
concern for others. We must develop a thorough view of God’s word lest we fall prey to those who
misuse it.
