Luke 18:15-17
Parents were bringing infants to be touched by Jesus. The disciples rebuked them perceiving this as an
annoyance. But Jesus called the disciples and said, “…’Permit the children to come to Me, and do not
hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’” (16b). Often the simple faith of children
is what we point to in the exhortation: “Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God
like a child will not enter it at all.” (17). However, in the context of bringing babes, this is not the most
obvious quality. To me the outstanding character of infants is complete and total dependence. They can
do nothing for themselves but rely on parents for protection, provision, and all life's needs. Let us come
to God in both total dependence and confident reliance! God is honored by dependence, but offended
by independence and our tendency to live without reliance on Him.
