Luke 24:13-35
On the day Jesus resurrected, two disciples were on a trip from Jerusalem to Emmaus when He came
to them. God prevented them from recognizing Him and when Jesus asked what they spoke about, one
said, “…’Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here
these days?’” (18b). Jesus was not unaware, but was seeking to expose and correct their
misperceptions. They spoke of how their hope was crushed when Jesus was crucified: “But we were
hoping…” (21a). Often disappoints due to ignorance of Scripture, are they very events God uses for our
good. “And He said to them, ‘O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have
spoken!’” (26) Then He explained from Scripture that their disappointment was God’s appointment to
fulfill His promises! Ignorance of Scripture creates false expectations leading to disappointment in what
God is doing for our benefit.
