Luke 22:23-30
Following Jesus instituting the celebration for remembering (Communion), He informs them His
betrayer is sitting with Him at this table. First, they discussed who it might be, but then they
degenerated into a dispute about who was the greatest. Jesus steered them away from worldly
concepts of greatness saying, “…the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the
leader like the servant.” (26b). However, Jesus did not simple inform them of greatness in God’s
kingdom, He pointed to Himself as an example! “…But I am among you as the one who serves.” (25c)
He then commends them for standing with Him in His trials and promises them a place of significance
and prominence in His kingdom (30). A leader is not one who rises to a place of power, or one who
transmits information, but provides an example. Using a more modern phrases, Jesus was saying, ‘Do
as I say and do as I do!’
