Luke 8:4-15
As a crowd gathered from a variety of cities, Jesus spoke by a parable. Response to His ministry was
as varied as the crowd. When He spoke to them in a parable, “His disciples began questioning Him as
to what this parable meant.” (9) He explained it to the 'questioning' disciples. The seed is God’s word
and the four soils are four heart conditions. The first is snatched away by the devil before it takes root.
The second receives the word with joy but fails in times of testing due to lack of roots. The third take
root, but are choked out by worldly distractions and do not mature. The fourth, receives the word “…in
an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.” (15b) God's Word is
powerful, but our response hinges on how we receive it and if we highly value it! If we are not fruitful, it
is not faulty seed, but a heart condition.
