After King Ahasuerus’ anger subsided, his attendants suggested he search for beautiful young virgins to be prepared for his review. “‘Then let the young woman who pleases the king be queen in the place of Vashti.’ And the suggestion pleased the king, and he did accordingly.” (4) At the citadel in Susa resided a Jew named Mordecai who was the guardian of a beautiful young woman named Esther [His niece] because her parents had died. She became like his own daughter. These details, including the death of her parents, contributed to her being in the right place at the right time! Mordecai’s wisdom, love, and character; Esther’s age, beauty & location, and the danger the Jews were in, all contributed to an amazing expression of God’s love. What may seem to be coincidence, is revealed in this book as God’s providence in power and great love for His people. We must guard against thinking our placement and privilege is for our personal benefit. This story is not about the mere exaltation of Mordecai & Esther, but for the salvation of all the Jews in exile [due to disobedience]. It’s not about privilege, it’s about providence! This becomes obvious as the narrative unfolds.
