While Mordecai was tending to Esther’s well being, two of the king’s officials became angry and plotted to kill him. “But the plot became known to Mordecai and he informed Queen Esther, and Esther told the king in Mordecai’s name.” (22) Why would Mordecai be concerned with the well being of a king who enslaved his people? The same principle of honor for authority he had instilled in Esther, he exemplified himself. This was not to advance himself or gain favor, for honoring authority was his nature. It is impossible to impart a principle or truth we do not embrace ourselves. It was, in fact, by honoring the king, he was honoring God. When his concern was investigated and found to be accurate, the two men were “…hanged on a wooden gallows; and it was written in the Book of the Chronicles in the king’s presence.” (23b, c). This event will prove to be a critical element to the future of Mordecai, Esther, and the entire nation of Jews people. Honoring authority is key to our impact on both our future and the future of those we serve. Why? Not only was Mordecai’s deeds recorded in the king’s book, but God took note and recorded it in heaven.
