“During the night the king could not sleep, so he gave an order to bring the book of records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king.” (1) In so doing he realized he failed to honor Mordecai for thwarting the plot against his life. He then asks who is in the courtyard and he is told Haman is there and invites him in for counsel. Haman was there intending to ask for permission to kill Mordecai. He asks Haman this question: “…’What is to be done for the man whom the king desires to honor?’ And Haman said to himself, ‘Whom would the king desire to honor more than me?’” (6b, c). Thinking he is the person to be honored, he suggests an elaborate plan to cloth him with royal garments and mount him on the king’s horse and proclaim before him, “…’So it shall be done for the man whom the king desires to honor.’’” (9d). Then the king orders Haman to do for Mordecai what he suggested undermining Haman’s plan. After this, Haman runs home to inform his family and friends and they realize Haman’s plan is doomed and he will likely fall before the very man he was trying to kill. All of man’s evil intent cannot reign over a Sovereign God Who loves His people. God is greater than evil men’s plans.
