“On that day King Ahasuerus gave the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews, to Queen Esther; and Mordecai came before the king, because Esther had disclosed what he was to her. Then the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken away from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.” (1-2) The irony of this change is incredible.. Yet, Esther was not content with being spared and blessed. She used this time of favor to intervene for all the Jews. She comes pleading with the king to revoke Haman’s letters written to eliminate the Jews. Yet the king’s decree could not be changed, but he gave Mordecai and Esther authority needed to grant the Jews the ability, “…in each and every city the right to assemble and to defend their lives, to destroy, kill, and eliminate the entire army of any people or province which was going to attack them,…” (11b, c). Only then did Mordecai and Esther enjoy the favor bestowed on them. We must not become so preoccupied with our own well being that we forget the danger the rest of God’s family is facing. Our favor comes from God, not only for our benefit, but to equip us to serve the well being of His people. Providence is often seen in God’s favor on a few for the benefit of the many.
