Only after Mordecai distributed the decree granting Jews the right to fight for themselves, did Mordecai move to a place where he could enjoy the favor he obtained. “Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in a royal robe of violet and white, with a large crown of gold and a garment of fine linen and purple; and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. For the Jews there was light, joy, jubilation, and honor.” (15-16) Many become so preoccupied with their own needs, they fail to see the danger others are facing. Yet neither Mordecai or Esther were content with this, but risked their lives for the nation of Jews. In contrast, Haman pursued personal advancement at the expense of others bringing great distress to Susa. When our concern is the well being of others, our advancement is not feared, but received with joy. This resulted in such respect many became Jews! “And many among the peoples of the land became Jews, because the dread of the Jews had fallen on them.” (17c). When we are concerned for the well being of God’s people, we will see our advancement not for our personal privilege, but for the purpose of serving the well being of others! This brings joy and respect to our faith.
