Luke 1:5-17
When God chose Zacharias and Elizabeth to raise the forerunner of His Son, He did not look to their fruitfulness
or potential, but to their faithfulness to His Word. “They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking
blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. But they had no child, because Elizabeth
was barren, and they were both advanced in years.” (6-7) When God looks for someone to impact His people with
a transformational word, He pursues faithfulness over potential fruitfulness. Being barren and old is not a problem
to God. God answered their prayers for a child even after they had given up hope. He would remove their
disgrace and honor His son through their son. From their barrenness God brought one full of His Spirit and not full
of self. From John would come the greatness that turned many back to God.
