Luke 8:40-56
While the Gerasenes begged Jesus to leave, He was welcomed on the other side of the lake. Jairus, a
synagogue official, begged HIM to come and heal his only daughter who was dying. However, Jesus
was interrupted by a woman pressing through the crowd with a hemorrhage not healed for twelve
years. In spite of Jairus position and the urgency of his dying daughter, Jesus stopped to minister to this
woman who violated the law by being in public. As He finishes, word is brought to Jairus his daughter
has died. Jesus turns to him and says, “…’Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be
made well.’” (50b). Some might question Jesus’ wisdom delaying the serving of a godly religious man
with a dying only child, to serve a law breaking woman. Yet, Jesus saw, not her physical need and faith,
but her spiritual one as well. Besides, delaying His going to Jairus home resulted in a resurrection
testifying to Who He was. Jesus does not prefer religious people over law breakers, but cares about all
and He is never late!
