Luke 19:11-27
This crowd believed Messiah would introduce a sudden kingdom liberating them from their oppressors,
but Jesus revealed what is behind this misperception in a parable. A man went on a journey to become
king and then would return, so he entrusted servants with ten minas. This was a substantial investment
[one mina = 3 months wages]. When he returned as king, he called his servants to account. Those who
gained more were rewarded with increased authority. But the servants who returned what he entrusted
without increase, made excuses perceiving him as a cruel and unreasonable man. Their lie was
exposed and the truth behind it asserted: “And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be
their king -…” (27). Our sinful nature will embrace false perceptions of God to excuse our responsibility
and accountability to Him, but deep down the real reason is we do not want Him to be our King.
Rejecting God as King leads us into great and damaging misperceptions of God, our present, and our
future! The only unreasonable thing about God is that He sent His sinless Son to embrace the penalty
for our sins.
