In the parable of the Good Shepherd, we learn the characteristics and contrasts between Jesus and imposters. He is both the door and the shepherd who knows God’s favor and guidance. In contrast to previous leaders, He is in relationship with His sheep. The sheep [disciples] recognize Jesus’ voice and He calls them by name. He only leads those who are in a relationship with Him. Jesus further clarifies: He is the door and those entering through Him find salvation, nourishment and abundant life. Our motivation is the spiritual well-being of those we serve. As shepherds [pastors] we too follow Jesus example. We also must be examples. We should never follow the instruction of someone who fails to provide an example.
