The works of Jesus testified to Who He was [& is]. Yet, many did not believe challenging : “…’How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” (24b). His response was He had already told them, but their issue was not a lack of clarity, but their refusal to hear and did not belong to Him. They resisted both He and His Father. Jesus’ sheep listen and follow [obey], and consequently they have life and security. Because He “told them plainly,” they wanted to kill Him thinking He was guilty of blasphemy. Jesus defended Himself from Scripture so they sought to seize Him, but “…He eluded their grasp.” (39b). Unfortunately, no matter how effectively and powerfully we present the gospel, some are determined to reject it. For some there are no adequate arguments or demonstrations, but they will reject the gospel and remain hostile toward God and His people. At times, the problem is not the message, but the hearers themselves.
