Previously, the Jews asked Jesus to give them a straight answer regarding who He was. However, when He did, they had this odd response: “Then they were trying again to seize Him, yet He eluded their grasp.” (39) Then Jesus left and went to where John baptized. Here Jesus was received and believed by them because they embraced John’s message of repentance. Jesus did not waste time trying to argue with those who opposed Him, but focused on those who received God’s word and believed in Him. We are responsible to present and demonstrate the gospel, but not to persist in trying to convince resistant people. May God give us the wisdom to elude the grasp of those who reject the gospel, focus our energy on those receiving the gospel, and not waste time with those whose opposition is a snare to derail us from our mission. We are not to view their resistance as a defect in our presentation, but attribute it to their desire to insure present lifestyles and avoid transformation.
