John identifies Jesus here, and in Revelation, as the “Word.” Life begins with God’s Word! There is no life except what exists by His Word. “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (4-5) The word “comprehend” means “…to take eagerly, i.e. seize, possess,…” (Strong’s # g2638 from Olive Tree Enhanced Strong’s Dictionary). Though Jesus came to bring light, many rejected Him clinging to darkness. Light increases clarity and exposes what needs adjusting and correcting. Jesus experienced persistent opposition. Yet, this does not indicate any defect in Him, but in those who cling to darkness. Could this be why many do not regularly turn to God’s Word? Are we among those who shun the Light, or those who aggressively take hold of it to become free of what hides in darkness?
