When Jesus arrived, He discovered Lazarus had been buried four days ago. Interestingly, the mourning friends [of Lazarus’ family] arrived before Jesus to console the family. However, sympathizing friends may be a distraction to faith. When Martha heard He was near, she left her home, the mourners, and went out to meet Jesus. First, she expressed her disappointment and struggle to believe: “…’Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.’” (21b-22). Jesus declared her brother would rise and encouraged her to believe: “…’I am the resurrection and the life;…’” (25b). He was not too late, but on time creating a greater understanding of His person. Because of His words, Martha went from disappointment to faith. Let us be willing to abandoned our consolers [supportive mourners] to be in the presence of Jesus and be attentive to His word so we can move from our disappointment to the place of faith.
