When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead He was met with two very different reactions: “Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.” (45-46). Instead of believing, some turned to a people who were hostility postured toward Christ. How could this be in view of such a miracle? Like the Pharisees, many are attached to their place and privilege and, consequently, fear its loss. What was their fear? “…the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” (48b). Yet, Caiaphas, by his position as high priest, prophesied of the value of Jesus coming death. When we cling to the natural mind, we cannot discern the things of the Spirit or see beyond our natural perspectives. Are we open to the spiritual perspective or are we held captive to rational earthly perceptions? Being restricted to a rational perspective blinds us to an eternal spiritual perspective.
