John developed quite a following so Jewish leaders from Jerusalem asked, “…’Who are you?’” (19b). At first, he said, “…‘I am not the Christ.’” (20) John knew his role was not found in his significance, but in pointing people to the significance the Messiah. They pressed him for specifics and the reason for his ministry. He responded “…’I am a VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.’” (23). John found his identity in the prophetic scripture and shunned inappropriate accolades. He was a VOICE preparing others to recognize and receive the Anointed One. He was not worthy to untie the Messiah’s sandals, never mind wash His feet. As those who seek to help people see Christ, we must realize who we are not, who Jesus is, and our own insignificance. Only then can we be a “voice” for God. We are not to be an echo, but a voice!
