John 12:1-8 “Worship Misunderstood”

Six days before Jesus was crucified, He was honored by Lazarus family. Martha served Him, Lazarus set in His presence, and Mary worshiped extravagantly. “Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair;…” (3a & b). As the house filled with the perfume’s fragrance, Judas vigorously objected saying its worth could have been used to serve the poor. Though this is his stated reason, it was actually rooted in his own self-interest and desire for personal benefit. “Therefore, Jesus said, ‘Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial.” (7). Both Judas and the religious leaders’ concerns were rooted in self-interest, and consequently, they would join forces against Jesus. When we express ourselves in costly worship rooted in love, humility, and deep gratitude, we should not be surprised at the objections or opposition from those motivated with desires rooted in their own personal benefit.
