“The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” (29) John did not recognize Him, but he called the public to an expression of repentance in water baptism, “…so that He might be manifested to Israel,…” (3b). God revealed to John “…’He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’” (33b). This baptism is spoken of in all four Gospels. Jesus did not only come to erase the penalty of sin, but to break the power of sin over us and empower us to live in the fulness of His Spirit! May God give us the wisdom to see the baptism of the Holy Spirit is an essential and foundational part of our salvation.
