After Jesus washed His disciples feet, He exhorted them to embrace the humility essential to properly follow Him. It is not enough to understand this, but we must follow through in deed to be blessed. Like Jesus, we press on in God’s will though we experience the betrayal of those closest to us. Jesus was able to do so by knowing God’s word. “…; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.’” (13b & c) He knew the disciples struggled with this, so He told them in advance so they would cling to who He is and what He said regardless of what they faced. Then He said: “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” (20). Let us not be derailed from faith and God’s plan by those who mistreat or even betray us. These adversities are part of God’s process to fulfill His Word and facilitate His plan! Don’t avoid God’s process or we will not succeed in God’s Plan. His ways are not ours (Isaiah 55:8)!
