When Jesus told His disciples they could not go with Him, no one was more confused than Peter. He insisted, “…’I will lay down my life for You.’” (37c). Jesus challenged him saying he would deny Him three times before morning came. Jesus did not need Peter to lay down His life for Him, but Peter did need Jesus to lay His life down for him. After telling Peter of his weakness, Jesus said: “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.” (14:1). Like Peter, we should not get drowned in our failed love for Christ, but shift our faith to the love of God and His Son for us as seen in His going to the cross for us. The disciples needed to understand Jesus’ death and separation had a great purpose. In it, He would prepare a place for them [& us] in the Father. Consequently, they would never be separated from Him again. May God grant us the wisdom and grace to shift our FAITH from our love for God to His love for us! Our love for God will let us down, but God’s love for us will never let us down as we trust in Him fully.
