John had pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God, the Savior, and Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. When with two of his disciples, he pointed to Jesus and said, “…’Behold, the Lamb of God.’” (36b). When they heard this, they left John to follow Jesus. When Jesus noticed, He asked what they were seeking. They said, “…’Rabbi (Teacher), where are You staying?’” (38c). This response indicated a desire to follow and be [stay] with Him. John was not jealous at their departure to leave his church and join Jesus’ church. His heart of pointing others to Christ allowed him to release them to follow Jesus. Andrew’s enthusiasm to follow Jesus, was evident in inviting his brother (someone he loved) Simon, whom Jesus promised to transform. Like John and Andrew, when we truly know and love Jesus, we will be excited to invite, and release others, to follow Him! Failure to invite and release others to fully follow Jesus is not love, but reflects deep insecurity that seeks to control others rather than lead them.
