“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do;…” (12) This promise seems outrageous, and is sometimes explained away by saying we do greater works by leading people to the miracle of salvation. Yet, while this is truly a wonderful miracle, Jesus also did this! There are conditions to this promise. It is rooted in Jesus’ person, word, work and purpose. Our faith must be aligned with Him, His motives, and His purpose. We do not turn to others, for Jesus said, “If you ask Me…” (14a). Finally, functioning in power does not excuse disobedience. Why? Genuine love for Christ is evidenced in keeping [obeying] His Word. Jesus paid a high price to provide this amazing promise and any self-dependence [self-reliance] is an insult to Him, His Father, and the work of the cross.
