Jesus invited Philip to follow Him and Philip approached Nathanael: “…’We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’” (45b) Nathanael was a student of Scripture so Philip appealed to them. However, because of his knowledge of God’s Word something did not match HIs understanding, so Philip invited him to “…’Come and see.’” (46b). Jesus spoke of Nathanael as: “‘…an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!’” (47b). At first, this puzzled him. So Jesus pointed to where he was [studying scripture under a fig tree] revealing not only his physical, but his heart for God. To this man [who loved and studied Scripture] Jesus declared he would see ‘greater things’ as He fulfilled Jacob’s dream bridging heaven and earth. When our hearts are pure and fixed on God’s word, we become the recipients of the promised greater things!
