“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” (6) I’m sure this was not the answer Thomas was looking for to clarify the cloud of confusion. Jesus had been clear about His purpose, but the disciples were blinded by their presuppositions. Philip asked to “…show us the Father, and it is enough for us.’” (8b). Jesus’ response must have been startling: “…’Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip?…’” (9b). He continues to explain He lives in the Father and the Father in Him and so perfectly represents the Father by saying His words and doing His works. Are we, at times, so attached to presuppositions that we are unable to see the obvious? May God give us grace to lay them all aside so we can see clearly.
