Jesus’ final words reveal the benefits of His departure [death]. Not only will they enjoy direct access to God, but on the basis of Jesus’ person, word and work, they abide in His loving Father as well. This relationship is key to true and complete joy – “…ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.” (24b). Though they said they understand, Jesus knew their failure to recognize, and admit, their vulnerability. However, their failure [scattering from Him] does not leave Him alone or prevent them from experiencing peace. “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have PEACE [emphasis mine]. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (33) Because of Christ, we can have joy and peace in tribulation!
