Jesus’ announcement of His departure overwhelmed His disciples with sorrow. Yet, His view was very different: “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to You.” (7). The presence of the Holy Spirit in us is seen as better than Jesus’ physical presence [for it is limited]. The promise of the Spirit is essential to the ongoing ministry of Jesus through His body, the church. It brings conviction on the world, instruction for His followers in righteousness, and certainty in our destiny, and the finished work of Christ in judging the ruler of this world. Advancement of God’s kingdom is not in the hands of our rulers [or our elections], for it is facilitated by the activity of the Holy Spirit and faith in the Word of God. In this day, when we vote for our leaders, let’s not forget Who has the [our] future in His hands! We must trust God with our future and lean on His Spirit to persist in advancing His kingdom in a fallen world.
