When Jesus was arrested, Peter and another disciple (John) followed Him into the court. Being known to the high priest, they let the other disciple, who in turn spoke to the door keeper, so they allowed Peter in also. The slave girl asked, “…’You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?’…” (17b). Peter denied it and joined those warming themselves by a fire. As Jesus was challenged about His disciples and teaching, He answered exposing their hypocrisy and an officer struck and rebuked Him. When attached to a lie, we tend to respond in anger, defy logic, and deny the obvious. Two more times Peter was asked about being Jesus’ disciple but he denied it as he continued to warm himself. At the third denial, we read, “…and immediately a rooster crowed.” (27b). At this point the words previously given Peter from Jesus brought deep regret and repentance. However, the Jewish leaders did not. How do we respond to truth that exposes our hidden weaknesses? Are we angry or are we sorrowful?
