When Jewish leaders led Jesus to the Governor, they “…did not enter into the Praetorian so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.” (28b). Religious people can adhere to certain religious practices of faith while blatantly violating its core values. When anger begins to drive us, we become blinded to reality while clinging to religious traditions yet violate its key values and true purpose. As we learn here, and in Ephesians 4:26ff, anger opens our heart’s to the devil’s control and deep deception. When Pilot asked what accusation they were bringing, they sarcastically responded, “…’If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.’” (30b). This was an attempt to argue against reality and distract from their true and corrupt motives. They were driven by an irrational desire to kill Jesus so as to remove His influence which interfered with their agenda. Yet, even in this, God’s will and prophetic word was fulfilled in how He died. If love is blind, anger is even more so being deaf and void of rational thought. May God guard our hearts from such anger bringing severe blindness!
