Confused by Jewish leaders who said Jesus asserted Himself as a king, Pilate asked, “…’Are You the King of the Jews?’” (33b). His question and tone were rhetorical and even sarcastic. Pilate assumed wrongly Jesus would view him to carry out their murderous plot, so he pointed out the irony of His claim to be king. “Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.’” (36) The realm of Christ’s kingdom is unlike others, so at times, His servants [disciples] are prevented from fighting for what seems to be a just cause. When we lose sight of the realm of God’s kingdom, we become entangled in fights in the realm of other kingdoms [of darkness] that interfere with God’s will and plan. Jesus fought His battle in the garden in prayer. May we learn to fight our battles in the spiritual realm knowing this is how we fight our battles!
