Jesus’ silence is fascinating in view of being severely beaten, ridiculed and mocked. Pilate presented Jesus to the Jewish leaders wanting to release Him for he found no guilt in Him. The Jews argued because He claimed to be the Son of God He should die. Pilate’s fear intensified and he spoke with sincerity to Jesus, “…’Where are You from?’” (9b). But Jesus remained silent. Pilate asked if He realized His life or death was in his hands [under his control or authority]. “Jesus answered, ‘You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above;…” (11a) Consequently Pilate sought to release Him but political concerns swallowed up his concern for justice. Jesus’ ability to endure humiliation and false accusation is clearly seen in this verse. There are no human authorities except what is given from the heavenly realm where God reigns. As at this time, God uses humanity’s injustices to facilitate His plan and purpose. Sometimes, rather than argue our point, we should just stay silent.
