As Jesus hung on the cross nearing death, He embraced two final responsibilities. There were four women, including His mother, standing at the cross. “When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother!’” (26-27a) At that time, John became responsible to take Mary as His mother and she became part of his family. Jesus, thus fulfilled His family responsibility. Then, “…to fulfill the Scripture, said, ‘I am thirsty’” (28b). After fulfilling family responsibility and Biblical prophecy, He was released to say, “…’It is finished!’” (30b). Only when our faithfulness to God and His Word are reflected in faithfulness to our families, are we truly finished. Honoring our parents does not stop when we become adults!
