When the disciples were struggling with fear and unbelief, Jesus appeared to them saying: “…’Peace be with you.’” (19d). He showed them His hands and side. In this context He said: “…’Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.’” (21b). He then breathed on them to receive the Spirit and gave them authority and clarity for their mission. Thomas was not in attendance and refused to believe. Later, Jesus appeared to the group again speaking peace calling Thomas to faith, adding, “…’Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.” (29b). These signs were recorded so we can believe: “…that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” (31). Jesus still shows up to those who gather in His name (Mt. 18:19-20), not to judge us for our fears and unbelief, but to encourage us by His presence, speaking peace, faith, clarity, and directives to produce life!
