Jesus appeared to seven of His disciples in Galilee. They were there at His directive (Mark 14:28) but being concerned for their lack they turned to what was familiar [fishing]. They caught nothing all night. “But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.” (4) In His question, Jesus confronted their failure. When they admitted it, He gave instruction: ”…’Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.’” (6b) This parallels an earlier time when Jesus revealed Himself (Luke 5). In their obedience they caught 153 large fish and became aware of Jesus presence. “Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord.’” (7) When their lack was accompanied by obedience to Jesus’ words, they were reminded of Christ’s presence as their provider. Sometimes we experience failure so Jesus can reveal Himself in ways we otherwise would not see. Let us not be discouraged by our lack, for our lack provides an opportunity for Jesus to reveal Himself when we obey His commands!
