After breakfast, Jesus asked Peter: “…’Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?’…” (15b). Peter responds affirmatively so: “…He said to him, ‘Tend My lambs.’…” (15d). Peter’s previous assertion of love for Jesus was followed by three denials of Him. But Jesus calls Peter from failure to make his love for Christ the foundation of his service to God’s people. Jesus does not condemn us in our failures, but desires to restore us to usefulness. On the basis of love for Jesus, Peter moves from failure to feeding and tending God’s people. I remember an amazing woman of God (Elva Lunn) who, in her late 90’s, pointed her finger in my face and prophesied that if I feed God’s sheep, He would build His church. In one way or another we all serve God’s people and this service must flow from a deep love for Jesus Christ!
