Jesus’ last words to Peter were fascinating and illuminating. He told him that in his youth he walked independently following his desires, “…but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” (18b). Jesus was indicating how Peter would glorify God in his death. However, this is not a bad thing, though certainly a difficult thing to embrace. Like many of us, Peter did not think this was fair and asked what about John. Jesus’ answer could be put into this modern phrase: ‘None of your business!’ God has different paths and assignments for all of us, but all paths and assignments from God require dying to self in order to glorify God. Let us not get distracted from our mission or process by this sense of unfairness. God is in control of our maturing process and we must learn to lean fully upon Him trusting His great love for us so we are not distracted (Note Ro. 8:28ff).
