The passover was a prophetic celebration of deliverance from Egypt pointing forward to the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. What was intended to be a joyful celebration of freedom and God’s presence, devolved into a for profit business model. Jesus made a whip, drove out the business men and their products, and overturned their tables. This reminded His disciples of Scripture: “…’ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME.’” (17b). These Jews asked for a sign as evidence of His authority so Jesus responded: “…’Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’” (19b). Being focused on the natural realm, they objected saying it took 46 years to build this temple. But Jesus was referring to His body and when He was raised from the dead, His disciples, “…believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.” (22b). Would Jesus do the same today in our Churches? When we come together is it for a celebration of freedom in Christ or a for profit business model not concerned with God’s presence or people’s freedom? May God grant us the wisdom and understanding of staying focused on God’s presence and His people’s freedom.
