“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;” (1) He came at night seeming a bit confused: “…’Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.’” (2b). Nicodemus was confused by Jesus moving in God’s power and His rejection by most of the Jewish leaders. Jesus said, “…’Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.’” (3b) Jesus continued to explain spiritual birth. The rule of God [kingdom] is a spiritual matter and cannot be perceived by those who have only a natural birth [flesh]. Without spiritual birth, the issues of God’s kingdom seem foreign and will not be received by the natural men regardless of how intelligent or deeply religious. Through faith in Christ we can receive new birth and God’s rule by God’s Spirit.
