“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (16) This passage is sometimes misunderstood by failure to know its context and content. God was not “in love” with the world, but “so loved” the world. This expresses the value God places on a world hostile to Him. It is not so much an expression of mere quantity of love as it is the expression of the manner of love. In context, God’s Son is ‘given’ in crucifixion receiving the penalty for our sin. Thus, Jesus did not come to judge, but to save. However, the judgment men will suffer is refusing the light because they prefer darkness over light. When we begin to understand the mission of God in HIs Son, it becomes the greatest of insults to God if we reject this magnificent expression of love. Jesus death on the cross is the ultimate definition of love!
